Ecommerce store ready for AI shopping

If you run an online store, you have seen the headlines. AI agents will buy things for us. ChatGPT will replace the search bar. Your website won’t matter anymore. After 13+ years of building WooCommerce and Shopify stores, I’ve learned to wait for the data before rebuilding anything. In 2026, the data finally arrived, and it tells a more useful story than the headlines.

The short version: AI shopping is real, but not in the way it was sold. The assistants are very good at finding and comparing products. They are still bad at completing the purchase themselves. So the stores that win right now are the ones AI can read clearly, trust, and send buyers to. Below is what changed this year, and nine checks you can run on your own store.

What AI shopping looks like in 2026

AI shopping means a shopper asks an assistant like ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, or Claude what to buy, and the assistant researches, compares, and recommends products. The people calling this “agentic commerce” usually split it into discovery, authorisation, payment, and fulfilment. Discovery works well today. Payment is where most of the drama happened this year.

The traffic numbers are hard to ignore. Adobe’s data shows that in the first quarter of 2026, traffic from AI sources to U.S. retail sites grew 393% year over year. Conversion flipped too: in March 2026 AI traffic converted 42% better than non-AI traffic, while a year earlier it had converted 38% worse. By summer the gap had widened, with Adobe reporting that AI-referral traffic to U.S. retail sites rose 62% year over year in July 2026 and converted at a rate 60% higher than non-AI traffic.

One caution before you get excited. These are U.S. figures, and several large online retailers reported in early 2026 that AI referrals were still under 2% of their total referral traffic. So we are looking at a small channel that grows fast and converts well. That is a reason to prepare your store carefully. It is not a reason to rebuild your checkout next week.

The checkout experiment that didn’t work

The most useful lesson of the year came from OpenAI. It launched Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT on September 29, 2025, and the idea was simple: ask, pick, and pay without leaving the chat. Six months later it was scaled back. OpenAI said the first version of Instant Checkout wasn’t flexible enough, so it would let merchants use their own checkout experiences and focus on product discovery instead.

The reasons were practical. OpenAI struggled to onboard merchants, keep product data accurate, and add multi-item carts or loyalty memberships. Reports on how many Shopify merchants actually went live range from about a dozen to roughly 30. And Walmart’s Daniel Danker told Wired that conversion from Instant Checkout was three times lower than when shoppers clicked through to Walmart’s own properties.

I think this is good news for independent store owners. The AI finds the buyer. Your store still closes the sale. Your product pages, your checkout, and your trust signals still decide whether you get paid, which means the work you do on your own site keeps its value.

Where Google, Shopify and WooCommerce stand now

Google took a different route. In January 2026 it launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard that was co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. UCP powers a Buy button inside AI Mode and Gemini, but only for products eligible in the United States, Canada and Australia, and only for select merchants at this time. Indian stores can’t use it yet.

What Indian shoppers do have is AI-assisted discovery. In April 2026, Google India rolled out shopping features across Gemini, AI Mode and Circle to Search, built on its Shopping Graph of more than 50 billion products, 2 billion of which are updated every hour. The Gemini shopping experience works in English and Hindi, so your buyers are already comparing products this way.

Shopify moved furthest on the technical side. This month it extended WebMCP to checkout, including Shop Pay, so a browser agent can read a checkout, change the address, delivery method or discount code, and submit the order once the buyer authorises it. Shopify’s own benchmark found time per attempt dropping from 27.4 seconds to 10.3, although that is a vendor testing its own feature.

WooCommerce is more cautious, and I respect that. On 16 September 2026 it published an adaptation of Anthropic’s open-source Claude Commerce Agent starter code. Its shopper assistant can search the catalogue and build a cart, but WooCommerce says plainly that the assistant never places an order or takes payment, and checkout stays on the store’s own page. It’s also marked experimental, which matters if you’re thinking of using it on a live store.

What India’s UPI is doing with AI agents

India is building its own payment rails for this. In October 2025, Razorpay, NPCI and OpenAI started piloting Agentic Payments on ChatGPT, using UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay so users can pre-authorise a trusted AI agent within set spending limits. Then, at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi on February 20, 2026, Razorpay and NPCI announced Agentic Payments on Claude, in a pilot where selected users order from Zomato, Swiggy and Zepto inside the chat.

The next step is a national framework. Reuters reported on September 1, 2026 that NPCI had built a Unified Agent Protocol to let AI agents make UPI payments without a human approving each one. Don’t expect it in your payment gateway tomorrow, though. At Global Fintech Fest it was introduced as a consultative framework rather than a public feature, and no liability split between user, bank, merchant and agent developer has been published, and RBI approval is needed before launch.

Every item below pays off whichever AI platform wins, because ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity all need the same facts about your products. I’ve ordered them by how often I find problems in client stores.

1. Stop blocking the AI crawlers you actually want

Many stores blocked AI bots in 2024 and 2025 through a security plugin, Cloudflare rule, or a copy-pasted robots.txt. Some did it on purpose to protect content, and many did it without noticing. A bot rule added to stop scrapers can remove your store from AI product discovery completely. Open your robots.txt and your firewall settings and decide deliberately.

A simple starting point for a store that wants to be found looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: *
Disallow: /cart/
Disallow: /checkout/
Disallow: /my-account/

Keep cart, checkout and account pages blocked. Product and category pages should stay open. Google AI Mode relies on regular Googlebot crawling, so never block Googlebot while trying to control AI bots.

2. Add complete product schema

AI agents read structured data before they read your marketing copy. Every product page should output valid Product and Offer schema with price, currency, availability, brand, SKU, and GTIN where you have one. Adding shipping details and a return policy in schema helps too. WooCommerce and Shopify output some of this by default, but SEO plugins often duplicate or break it.

Here is a stripped-down example for an Indian store:

json

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Product",
  "name": "Handloom Cotton Saree - Indigo",
  "sku": "HCS-IND-01",
  "brand": { "@type": "Brand", "name": "YourBrand" },
  "offers": {
    "@type": "Offer",
    "price": "2499",
    "priceCurrency": "INR",
    "availability": "https://schema.org/InStock",
    "url": "https://example.com/product/handloom-cotton-saree-indigo/"
  }
}

Test a few real product URLs in Google’s Rich Results Test instead of assuming the plugin handled it. You can read the full property list on schema.org’s Product page.

3. Write product pages that answer questions

Shoppers now ask things like “which mixer grinder under ₹5,000 handles dosa batter and has a 5-year motor warranty?” An AI can only recommend you if your page states those facts in plain text. Specs hidden inside images, sliders, or PDF brochures are invisible to it. Put dimensions, materials, compatibility, warranty and use cases on the page as readable text.

Adobe tested this across U.S. retail. Individual product pages scored 66% on its AI visibility checker, meaning around a third of product page content could not be read by machines. Homepages did better. Product pages, where the buying decision happens, did worst. I see the same pattern on Indian stores that rely heavily on image banners and JavaScript tabs.

4. Keep price and stock accurate in real time

When an AI tells a shopper your product costs ₹1,899 and is in stock, it presents that as fact. If your page says ₹2,199 or out of stock, you’ve lost the sale and probably the customer’s trust. Stores that sync inventory from an ERP or marketplace on a slow cron job are at the most risk here. Shorten the sync interval and remove stale sale prices.

5. Put your policies in plain, specific text

Returns, shipping times, COD availability, warranty and pincode coverage should each have a dedicated page written in simple sentences. “Orders ship in 1 to 2 working days; delivery in Delhi NCR takes 2 to 4 days” is something an AI can quote. “Superfast delivery!” isn’t. Avoid putting these details in accordions that load through JavaScript or in image graphics.

6. Clean up your product feeds

Google’s AI shopping reads from the Shopping Graph, and your Merchant Center feed is how you feed it directly. Titles, GTINs, prices, images and availability should match your website exactly. For Shopify stores, product data can already appear in ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, since in 2026 ChatGPT focuses on discovery while Shopify merchants keep their own checkout. Poor data in your Shopify admin becomes poor data in the AI answer.

7. Make your pages fast and server-rendered

AI crawlers are less patient than browsers. If your product description appears only after a JavaScript bundle loads, some crawlers will see an empty page. Server-rendered HTML, compressed images, and a lean theme help both human visitors and machines. Heavy page builders and oversized images are the two causes I fix most often. My free online image compressor handles the image side quickly.

8. Make checkout fast and trustworthy for Indian buyers

AI-referred shoppers arrive further along in the buying process, because they already compared options inside the assistant. The pattern that repeats across datasets is that they land later in the funnel than generic search visitors. A slow or confusing checkout wastes that intent. Offer UPI, cards, wallets and COD where it suits your margins, keep forms short, and show delivery dates before payment.

If your gateway setup is old, this is the place to spend money. When UPI-based agent payments do open up to regular merchants, they will run through gateways like Razorpay and Cashfree, so a clean, current integration puts you in a better position. I cover this in my payment gateway integration service.

9. Measure AI referrals separately

You can’t judge a channel you can’t see. In GA4, create a custom channel group for AI referrers using a regex condition on the session source, such as:

chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|claude\.ai

Expect this to undercount. Many AI-influenced visits arrive with no referrer because the shopper typed your brand name after reading the answer. Still, it gives you your own conversion rate and order value to work with, instead of relying on U.S. benchmarks.

Should you build an AI shopping assistant on your own site?

Maybe, but treat it as a separate project. Being found by external AI agents is about data quality. Building an on-site assistant is about user experience, and it only helps if your catalogue is large or technical enough that shoppers need guidance. For most small stores, I’d finish the nine checks first. If you do want a product-finder chatbot or order-tracking assistant, that’s the kind of work I handle under AI integration and automation.

If you answered “no” to three or more of the high-priority rows, your store is probably invisible to a good share of AI shopping queries in your category.

What I’d skip for now

I wouldn’t rush into a checkout protocol integration. ACP has already changed shape once, UCP checkout isn’t available in India, and NPCI’s framework is still being consulted on. Even LearnWoo’s guide suggests that most independent stores treat a protocol integration as a 2027 decision, and I agree. Replatforming just to be “AI-ready” makes even less sense. Your current WooCommerce or Shopify store can do everything on this list.

FAQs

Can AI agents buy directly from my store today?

Not in any mainstream way for Indian stores. Assistants can find your products and send the shopper to your checkout. In-chat purchase flows are limited to pilots and large integrated retailers.

Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout still available?

Not in its original form. OpenAI moved its focus to product discovery and merchant apps in March 2026, and shoppers now finish most purchases on the retailer’s own site.

Does Google AI Mode show products from Indian stores?

Yes. Google launched AI shopping features for Gemini, AI Mode and Circle to Search in India in April 2026. The native Buy button powered by UCP isn’t available in India yet.

Do I need a special plugin for AI shopping?

No. The groundwork is clean product data, open crawler access, accurate stock, and readable policy pages. Plugins help with schema and on-site assistants, but they won’t fix a messy catalogue.

Will UPI let AI agents pay on my store automatically?

Not yet. NPCI’s Unified Agent Protocol was presented as a consultative framework in September 2026 and still needs RBI approval and a published liability framework.

Where to start this week

Pick one product that sells well and run it through checks 1 to 5. Look at the page source, test the schema, read your robots.txt, and compare the price on your site with your feed. It takes about an hour, and it will show you exactly how your store looks to an AI assistant.

If you’d rather have someone do the audit, I build and fix ecommerce websites for businesses across Delhi NCR and India, including Shopify stores and WooCommerce builds.
