I’ve been building websites for 10+ years now, and the hiring conversation has changed more in the last two years than in the ten before it. Hiring a freelance website developer in India used to be a simple decision. Clients used to ask “can you build me a website that looks good.” Now they ask “can you build me a website that ranks, converts, and doesn’t fall apart the moment I plug an AI chatbot into it.” Fair question. Here’s how I’d answer it if I were the one hiring.

Freelance Website Developer in India

What a Freelance Website Developer Actually Does

A freelance website developer is not just someone who “makes the site.” On a real project, I’m usually doing four different jobs inside one person: planning the site structure so it makes sense to both users and Google, writing or configuring the actual code, connecting the tools that keep the business running (payments, email, CRM, sometimes an AI assistant), and then sticking around after launch to fix whatever breaks.

That last part surprises people. A website isn’t a one-time delivery like a logo file. It’s closer to a car — it needs servicing. Plugins go out of date, hosting changes, Google updates its algorithm, and someone eventually forgets a password. The developer you hire is the person who answers the phone when any of that happens.

Freelancer vs Agency: What’s the Real Difference

This is the first fork in the road for most people, and honestly, neither option is universally better. It depends on what you’re building and how hands-on you want the process to be.

An agency gives you a project manager, a bigger team, and more redundancy — if one developer is out sick, someone else picks up the ticket. You pay for that structure, and you often pay for it even on small jobs where you didn’t need five people touching your site.

A freelance website developer in India, working solo or with a small trusted team, usually costs less for the same output, because you’re not funding an office and three layers of management. You also talk directly to the person writing the code, which cuts out the game of telephone that slows agency projects down. The trade-off is capacity — one person can only do so much at once, so timelines can slip if that person gets sick or overbooked.

My honest take, after years on both sides: for a business website, a landing page, an online store, or a custom web app under a certain size, a solid freelancer is usually the smarter spend. For a huge multi-team enterprise build with compliance requirements, an agency’s structure starts to earn its markup.

WordPress vs Shopify vs Custom Development

I get this question on almost every discovery call, so let me lay it out plainly.

WordPress is the right call when you need flexibility — a blog, a services site, a membership portal, something with a lot of content that a non-technical person will update themselves later. It’s also the cheapest to build and maintain, since the plugin ecosystem covers almost everything.

Shopify exists for one purpose: selling products online without reinventing the wheel. If you’re running an ecommerce store, Shopify handles inventory, checkout, tax, and shipping logic that would take a custom build weeks to replicate. I steer ecommerce clients here unless they have a genuinely unusual business model that Shopify’s apps can’t stretch to fit.

Custom development — Laravel, React, Node, whatever stack fits — is for when the business logic is the product. Booking systems with unusual rules, internal dashboards, marketplaces, anything with workflows that don’t exist as a plugin. It costs more and takes longer, but it’s the only option when off-the-shelf software genuinely can’t do the job.

WordPress vs Shopify vs Custom Development

If a developer recommends the same platform for every single project regardless of what you’re building, that’s worth noticing. It usually means they only know one tool, not that one tool is actually right for you.

How Much Experience Actually Matters

Years of experience matter less than what those years were spent doing. I’ve seen developers with two years who ship cleaner code than developers with ten, because those ten years were spent doing the same simple brochure site over and over.

What I’d actually check: has this person launched sites that are still live and functioning three, five, ten years later? Have they handled a site that got hit with a security breach, or a sudden traffic spike, or a payment gateway that stopped working at 2am on launch day? Those situations teach you things a tutorial never will.

Experience with recent technology matters too, separately from years in the field. A developer who’s spent 13 years exclusively on old-school PHP without ever touching an API integration or an AI feature is going to struggle the moment a client asks for a smart search bar or an automated support widget.

How to Evaluate a Portfolio Properly

Don’t just look at the screenshots. Anyone can screenshot a beautiful homepage. Click through to the live site, if it’s still live, and actually use it. Load it on your phone. Check how fast it loads on a slow connection, since that’s what most of your visitors will actually experience.

A few specific things worth checking:

  • Does the site actually rank for anything, or was SEO an afterthought
  • Is the checkout or contact form actually functional, not just decorative
  • Does the mobile version work as well as desktop, not just “not broken”
  • Are there testimonials or case studies tied to real, checkable businesses

I’d also ask for one or two examples in the same category as your project. A portfolio full of restaurant sites doesn’t tell you much about whether someone can build you a SaaS dashboard.

Questions to Ask Before You Hire

I’d ask these on the first call, before any contract is signed:

  1. Who exactly will be writing the code — you, or someone on your team I haven’t met yet?
  2. What happens if I need a change after launch? Is that billed separately, and how?
  3. Who owns the code and the domain once the project is done?
  4. What’s your process when something breaks in production?
  5. Can I talk to a past client, not just read a testimonial you picked?

The answers matter less than how directly they’re given. A developer who’s vague about ownership or support terms is telling you something about how the rest of the project will go.

Pricing: What You’re Actually Paying For

Pricing for a freelance website developer in India varies enormously depending on scope, but a few patterns hold. A basic WordPress brochure site sits at the lower end. A Shopify store with custom sections and app integrations costs more. Custom Laravel or React builds cost the most, because you’re paying for original engineering rather than configuration of existing tools.

The trap most first-time buyers fall into is comparing quotes without comparing scope. A ₹15,000 quote and a ₹80,000 quote for “the same website” are almost never actually the same website — one usually excludes things like SEO setup, mobile testing, revisions, or post-launch support that the other includes. Ask for a line-item breakdown, not just a total.

Cheap work isn’t automatically bad, and expensive work isn’t automatically good. What matters is whether the price maps to a scope you understand and agreed to in writing.

Timeline: What’s Reasonable to Expect

A simple brochure site can realistically launch in one to two weeks once content is ready. Content readiness is the part clients usually underestimate — I’ve had projects stall for a month because the client hadn’t finalized their own copy or images yet, not because of anything on my end.

An ecommerce store typically runs four to six weeks, since there’s product data, payment setup, and shipping logic to configure and test properly. A custom application can run anywhere from six weeks to several months, depending on how many workflows it needs to support.

Be wary of anyone promising a complex custom build in a handful of days. It’s either going to be built badly, or it’s going to be a template stretched to look custom, neither of which serves you well six months in.

Maintenance: The Part Everyone Forgets to Budget For

A website is never really “done.” Plugins need updates, security patches need applying, backups need to actually be tested, not just scheduled and forgotten. I’ve inherited more than one site where the previous developer disappeared after launch, and the client had no idea their WordPress core was three years out of date.

Ask upfront whether maintenance is included, sold separately, or not offered at all. If it’s not offered, ask what happens when something breaks — do you need to find a new developer from scratch, and how long does that usually take? A developer with a clear maintenance plan is signaling that they expect to still be around next year, which is a good sign in itself.

Security: Non-Negotiable, Not Optional

Security gets treated as an add-on far too often, and it’s one of the areas where cutting corners costs the most later. At minimum, a site should have SSL configured properly, regular automated backups, a firewall or security plugin on WordPress builds, and strong admin credentials that aren’t the default the CMS ships with.

Ask specifically what the developer does about security, not whether they “care about” it — everyone says they care about it. I want to hear about a specific stack: which backup solution, which firewall, how often patches get applied, and what the recovery plan looks like if something does go wrong.

SEO: Built In, Not Bolted On

SEO baked into the build from day one is a completely different thing from SEO added as an afterthought. Site structure, page speed, mobile responsiveness, clean URLs, and proper heading hierarchy all affect ranking, and all of them are far easier to get right during development than to retrofit later.

I’d ask a developer directly: does the quote include basic on-page SEO — meta titles, descriptions, alt text, sitemap submission — or is that a separate service? A site that’s technically excellent but invisible on Google isn’t doing the business much good, however nice it looks.

AI-Ready Websites: What This Actually Means in 2026

“AI-ready” gets thrown around loosely, so let me be specific about what it actually covers on a real project. It means the site’s content and structure are set up so AI search tools and chatbots can actually read and understand them — proper schema markup, clean semantic HTML, and content written in a way that answers real questions rather than just stuffing keywords.

It also increasingly means the site itself has AI features built in — a smart chatbot trained on your actual product catalog, AI-powered product recommendations, automated content generation for blogs or product descriptions, or search that understands intent instead of just matching exact words. A freelance AI website expert should be able to explain, in plain terms, which of these actually make sense for your business and which are just expensive novelty.

Not every business needs an AI chatbot bolted onto its homepage. What every business does benefit from is a site structured cleanly enough that AI tools — and Google’s own AI-driven search features — can actually parse and represent it accurately.

How to Choose the Right Freelance Website Developer / AI Website Developer In India

Hiring a freelance website developer in India comes down to matching the right skill set to what you’re actually building, and getting the terms in writing before work starts. The technology changes every year like AI features, new frameworks, new SEO rules — but that part of the hiring process hasn’t changed in 13 years, and it’s not going to.

If you’re evaluating a freelance AI website expert for your next project, ask the direct questions above before you ask about price. The price only makes sense once you know exactly what it’s buying you.
