Shopify AI shopping agents are no longer limited to a few big partners. Shopify has opened its product catalog to any AI shopping agent a developer wants to build. Until now, only big partners like OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Meta had that kind of access, each through its own deal. The Verge reported the change on 13 October 2026.
The new tools live on shop.dev. Through them, an AI agent can search more than 1 billion products from millions of Shopify stores, sign a shopper in with their Shop account, and pay with Shop Pay. The shopper still has to approve each payment.
I wrote about Shopify opening its checkout to AI agents a couple of weeks ago. This is the next step. The agents are no longer a handful of big names, and that changes who might be sending orders to your store.
What is the Shopify Catalog, and what can AI agents do with it?
The Shopify Catalog is a structured database of product information from eligible Shopify stores. It holds titles, descriptions, images, prices, variants and stock levels. AI platforms and shopping agents read it so they can find and compare your products without you sending them a separate feed.
The new developer platform is called Shop MCP. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a common way for AI assistants to connect to outside tools. According to shop.dev, an app or agent connected to it can:
| What the agent can do | How it works |
|---|---|
| Search the catalog | Search by text, photo or a similar product, with filters such as price, ships-to country and condition. Search is free and needs no API key. |
| Read product details | Get variants, live stock, specs and images for a product. |
| Sign the shopper in | One-click sign-in with Shop, which shares name, email, saved addresses and orders with the app. |
| Pay with Shop Pay | Shop Pay issues single-use payment credentials, so the agent never sees the shopper’s real card. Each payment needs the shopper’s approval. |
| Track orders | Show the shopper’s online and in-store orders, with tracking and delivery dates. |
There’s also an early-access programme, Promoted Placements, where apps can earn commission on products they surface. It currently runs on a waitlist.
Shopify adds some rules for developers. Apps can’t cache search results or re-host merchant images, and they’re told to check availability before linking, because AI-inferred product attributes can be missing or wrong.
How Shopify AI shopping agents work for merchants
If you sell on Shopify, you don’t need to install anything for this. Eligible products go into the Shopify Catalog automatically, and Shopify’s help docs say merchants can’t opt out of the Catalog itself.
What you can control is which AI channels reach your products. In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic. Shopify calls this feature Agentic Storefronts, and it’s on by default for eligible stores. It currently covers ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta surfaces such as Muse.
For each channel, there are two settings to look at:
- Shopify Catalog access decides whether that AI channel can read your products. Blocking a channel doesn’t remove your products from the Catalog itself.
- Direct checkout decides whether shoppers can buy inside Google, Copilot or Meta without leaving the chat. In ChatGPT, the purchase still finishes on your own store’s checkout, in an in-app browser or a new tab.
A few things stay the same. You remain the merchant of record and keep the customer relationship. In its March 2026 announcement, Shopify said there are no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates, and orders arrive in your admin with referral attribution.
The road to Shopify AI shopping agents
Shopify AI shopping agents didn’t arrive overnight. Shopify has been opening up one step at a time this year:
| When | What changed |
|---|---|
| 13 October 2026 | Shopify opens the Catalog and Shop Pay checkout to any developer’s agent through Shop MCP (The Verge, shop.dev). |
| September 2026 | Meta’s Muse agent gets access to Shopify merchants by default (EcomCrew). |
| 24 March 2026 | Agentic Storefronts go live: merchants can sell to ChatGPT users, and the Agentic plan launches globally for brands not on Shopify (Shopify News). |
Alongside this, Shopify co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) with Google. It’s an open standard that lets agents and stores agree on how product discovery, checkout and orders work, and Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart are listed as supporters.
What Shopify AI shopping agents mean for store owners in India
The honest answer is that it depends on your store and settings, and some of it isn’t clear yet.
Shopify’s help pages say Agentic Storefronts are on by default for “eligible stores,” but they don’t list which countries, currencies or payment methods count. So don’t assume your Indian store is already selling inside ChatGPT or Gemini. Open Sales channels > Agentic in your own admin and see what’s available to you.
Payments are the other question. Shop MCP checkout runs on Shop Pay, and many Indian stores rely on Razorpay, PhonePe, Cashfree or cash on delivery instead. Shopify hasn’t published how agent purchases work for stores that don’t use Shop Pay, so treat this part as unconfirmed for India.
The product data side applies to everyone, though. Whatever agent finds your products, whether it’s ChatGPT or Shopify AI shopping agents built by independent developers, it reads the same catalog. If your titles are vague, your variants messy or your stock out of date, an agent will either skip your product or describe it wrongly. That’s worth fixing now, whether or not agent checkout reaches your store this year.
Shopify itself hasn’t published data on whether these AI channels bring merchants more sales. I’d watch your own order attribution in the admin rather than trust anyone’s projections, mine included.
How to get your store ready for Shopify AI shopping agents.
None of these steps needs an app or a developer. Most take an afternoon.
- Check your AI channel settings. Go to Sales channels > Agentic and decide, channel by channel, whether to allow Shopify Catalog access and direct checkout.
- Rewrite vague product titles. “Blue Kurta” tells an agent very little. “Women’s Cotton A-Line Kurta, Indigo Blue, Hand Block Print” tells it what to match against a shopper’s request.
- Fill in descriptions properly. Mention material, size, fit, care instructions and who the product is for. Agents answer questions from this text.
- Clean up variants and options. Use one consistent option name (Size, Colour) and make sure each variant has its own price, stock and image.
- Choose the right product category. Shopify’s help docs list categories among the data the Catalog reads.
- Keep stock and prices accurate. An agent that promises an out-of-stock item, or a price you changed yesterday, loses the shopper’s trust and your sale.
- Use clear images. Shop MCP lets agents search by photo, so a clean main image helps your product get matched.
- Watch your order attribution. Check where orders come from in your admin each month, so you know whether AI channels are actually selling for you.

My take
I have mixed feelings about this one. Opening the catalog to any developer means your products could show up in agents you’ve never heard of, built by people you’ll never talk to. That’s a lot of reach, and a little less control.
I like that Shopify kept the shopper’s approval step and uses single-use payment credentials. I’m less comfortable that merchants can’t opt out of the Catalog itself, only block specific channels. For most of my clients, that trade is fine. If you sell something regulated or price-sensitive, look at those settings this week rather than later.
After 13+ years of building online stores, my advice is boring but it works: clean product data pays off whether a customer, Google or an AI agent is reading it. Start there.

FAQs
What are Shopify AI shopping agents?
They’re AI assistants that search Shopify’s product catalog for a shopper, compare options and help them buy. They can run inside apps like ChatGPT or Gemini, or be built by any developer using Shopify’s Shop MCP tools.
Can Shopify AI shopping agents buy from my store without the customer agreeing?
No. Through Shop MCP, every Shop Pay payment needs the shopper’s approval, and the agent gets a single-use payment credential rather than the real card.
Can I stop AI agents from showing my products?
Partly. You can block individual AI channels from reading your products in Sales channels > Agentic. You can’t remove your products from the Shopify Catalog itself.
Do I pay extra fees for AI agent sales?
Shopify said in March 2026 that Agentic Storefronts carry no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates. Check your plan’s terms, since fees can change.
Is this available for Shopify stores in India?
Shopify hasn’t published a country list for Agentic Storefronts. Check Sales channels > Agentic in your admin to see what’s available for your store.
How many products are in the Shopify Catalog?
Shopify’s developer site says more than 1 billion products from millions of stores.
